KC and The Sunshine Band

The year was 1975, I remember it well.  I was 23 years old, and used to frequent an establishment called the Beefeater Inn and Alehouse in Lansdale, Pennsylvania on many a Friday or Saturday night.  They had live bands on weekends, and almost all of them were covering KC and the Sunshine Band tunes, such as "Get Down Tonight," "Put on Your Boogie Shoes," and "That's the Way I Like It."  I still have the vinyl album sitting here right next to me.

Everybody was doing a dance called "The Bump" back then, leisure suits, big collars, flowered shirts, and bell bottoms were cool.  As some of us say, "Those were the good old days."  Now, it's 2012 and KC and the Sunshine Band was just out playing music again not too long ago, and they still got it.  It never ceases to amaze me, how some of the Geriatric Rock Heroes of my younger years, are still kicking ass.  KC and the Sunshine Band, is just one of many shining examples.  Maybe Sha Na Na got it right, when they sang "Rock and Roll is Here to Stay."  I certainly hope so, because I would think my grandchildren would be missing out on something great if they never got to listen to some of that great music from the '60s and 70s. Leslie West

Wow.  What can I say about Leslie West.  I saw Leslie West and Mountain Live at East Stroudsburg State College (now ESU), back in 1969 or 1970.  Had a great date with a really gorgeous young lady (Tara was her name), sadly, she had an overprotective father who refused to allow me to drive us to the concert by ourselves, so her daddy had to take us.  Anyway, so much for memories of old flames.

Leslie West was a big guy with a big sound.  The band "Mountain" had just recently released their album titled "Mountain"  (proudly, I still have that vinyl record in my collection.)  Two songs on the album were getting some serious radio play at that time "Mississippi Queen" and "Theme for an Imaginary Western."  Back then, "Mountain" was comprised of Corky Laing on Drums, and Felix Pappalardi on Bass Guitar.  As much as Leslie West was a big man, Corky Laing had huge wild hair and a wild look in his eyes.  I don't remember exactly how many drum sticks he broke during the course of that concert, but it was most certainly several.

Hey, Guys and Gals, I am an old dude, and Green Day hasn't been around nearly as long as I have.  Two decades isn't so long, considering that I've been around for six decades.  Some people think I should be sitting in my recliner, sipping tea, and watching "Leave it to Beaver" re-runs on my vintage Motorola Console TV.  But, I consider it my duty to let all you younguns out there know that pops isn't too old too be listening to some great current music.  I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that I like every single song, but there are a lot of songs that I think have spunk, musical class, and quality............such as "Wake Me When September Ends,"  "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," and "I Hope You Have the Time of Your Life."  I'm not overly fond of the songs that are on the verge of sounding like heavy metal to me, but there aren't many of them that Green Day has recorded.

I've also seen a lot of videos of Green Days covers of other past great songs, such as "Johnny B. Goode," and "Working Class Hero."
